Port Stocks Rise Sharply on Higher Imports

Edible oil availability at major Indian ports has increased significantly as arrivals of imported crude palm oil and soybean oil accelerated. According to available data, total edible oil stocks at ports rose from 945,000 tonnes on July 15 to nearly 1.097 million tonnes by July 31.

The total stock increased 16.07% week-on-week, 25.36% month-on-month, and 17.58% compared with the same period last year, highlighting a substantial improvement in import availability.

Stock Position of Major Edible Oils

* Crude Soybean Oil: Recorded the sharpest increase, with stocks rising from 226,000 tonnes to more than 358,000 tonnes.

* Crude Palm Oil (CPO): Stocks increased from 318,000 tonnes to above 345,000 tonnes.

* RBD Palmolein: Stocks rose from 9,400 tonnes to 16,645 tonnes.

* Other Imported Oils: Stocks nearly doubled from 9,820 tonnes to 18,430 tonnes.

* Crude Sunflower Oil: The only major oil to witness a decline, with stocks falling from 381,000 tonnes to around 358,000 tonnes.

July Imports Expected to Reach 10-Month High

Trade organizations estimate that India’s total edible oil imports could rise to around 1.49 million tonnes in July, potentially marking the highest monthly import volume in the past 10 months.

Key Import Sources

India primarily sources its palm oil requirements from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Soybean oil is mainly imported from Argentina and Brazil, while sunflower oil supplies are sourced largely from Russia, Ukraine, and Argentina.

Market Outlook

The sharp rise in port inventories, coupled with expectations of higher July imports, indicates a comfortable supply position in the domestic edible oil market. This may keep near-term price pressure on domestic edible oils, although global palm and soybean oil prices, currency movements, and domestic demand will remain key factors for the market outlook.
